The advent of iOS 14 beta promises many innovations for the iPhone and iPad, and I would like to believe that these innovations will really come. What to expect from the next Apple operating system and iOS 14 rumors? First of all, all that iOS 13 and iOS 13.2 did not provide, focused, for the most part, on stability.
Now the time has come to change the user interface and to redesign applications – this is beyond any doubt. The network has a lot of information about what exactly Apple representatives will bring to iOS 14, so we decided to collect all the rumors and assumptions together, without waiting for June and WWDC 2020.
iOS 14 release date
- June 3 – Approximate Date for WWDC 2020
- Early June – iOS 14 beta released for some developers
- The end of June – the possible launch of a public beta version of iOS 14 for testing
- September 2020 – release of iOS 14 in parallel with the new iPhone
Theoretically, iOS 14 will be announced on Monday, June 3, at the traditional annual WWDC conference in San Jose. This date is not accurate, but since the two previous conferences were held on Mondays, June 4 and 5, respectively, some tendency can be seen.
iOS 14 developer beta: A beta version of a new operating system usually appears in the hands of partner developers a few days before WWDC. Most likely, this will be the case this time too.
iOS 14 public beta: This version will be intended for the general public, but will remain a bit crude, without some features.
The official iOS 14: The final version of iOS 14 will be released, as usual, in mid-September, when the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Max and iPhone 12 Max Pro will be presented.
iOS 14 Compatibility
So far, Apple has continued to support iPhone 5S, the first smartphone with a 64-bit processor on board. He, like the iPad Air and iPad mini 2, saw six versions of the operating system.
It is likely that the seventh version of these devices will not see – most likely, the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus will be the oldest devices with which iOS 14 will be compatible.
Apple can make the minimum requirement for upgrading to iOS 14 the presence of the A8 chipset. There are rumors that even the iPhone 6, iPad Air 2 and iPhone SE will not support iOS 14.
You should not expect that Apple at WWDC 2020 will definitely announce the incompatibility of the iPhone 5S with iOS 14. In addition, it should be noted that not all functions of the new OS will necessarily work on all devices. Some of them will require a TrueDepth camera, dual lens or 3D Touch interface.
- iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 9 / iPhone SE 2
- 11 Pro/11 Pro Max/11
- XS/XS Max
- XR/X
- 8/8 Plus
- 7/7 Plus
- 6s/6s Plus
- SE (2020)
- SE
- iPod touch (7th generation)
iPad – waiting for change
Every two years, the iPad lineup receives significant changes. It seems that iOS 14 will bring something new to the iPad software, bringing the capabilities of these tablets closer to computers. There is also a release version for the iPad 11 and iPad 12.9 this year.
What would you like to see on the iPad in 2020? For example, Desktop Mode with a menu and a taskbar at the top and bottom of the screen, respectively, as well as support for a Bluetooth mouse. Both of these functions are already implemented in the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4, but the performance of the touchscreen there has let us down. We hope that Apple will be able to make these innovations not only work, but also convenient.
Rumor has it that Apple representatives plan to change the user interface and home screen of the iPad in the first place, before any changes are made to the iPhone. I would like to see the expansion of the capabilities of Apple Files and support for external memory – this would make, for example, the iPad Pro a more user-friendly device.
iOS 14 Rumors
Home screen redesign
iOS 14 seems to finally change the Home screen, which hasn’t changed since 2007. Perhaps some of the applications and widgets on the Today screen will migrate to the home screen. This applies to weather forecasting, calendar and Apple News. It would also be convenient to receive information from the Apple Watch on the home screen. Despite the fact that rumors claim that these changes will affect only the iPad, we would like to see some changes in the UI and on the iPhone screens to no lesser extent.
iOS 14 – the appearance of dark mode
iOS 14 may become the OS that will bring users the long-awaited dark mode. Apple introduced it for macOS Mojave at WWWC last year, so the rumors about the appearance of such a regime on the iPhone and iPad in 2020 seem quite logical. Dark mode will make using applications at night more convenient, as in normal mode their color scheme is too light and hurts the eye.
Changes in the camera application
The camera application has long seemed too simplistic, it lacks functionality. Yes, it is convenient for ordinary users, but more advanced photography enthusiasts on other platforms get much more features. For example, owners of the Samsung Galaxy S9 can control the camera using gestures, shooting video in the LG V40 provides zoom anywhere in the screen, not just in the center, and Google Pixel 3 has a Night Sight mode that allows you to not use the flash when shooting at night, so as not to spoil the frame. In general, the expansion of the capabilities of the camera application is long overdue, this also applies to the resolution and frame rate control when shooting.
Appearance of Health and Activity apps on iPad
The Apple Health and Activity apps offer the user a wealth of information. These are graphs, and maps, and many numbers – everything that would look great on the big screen of the iPad, and not just on the Apple Watch or iPhone. At the same time, it would be nice to get application data on macOS as well.
Clipboard manager
The clipboard application exists, but its problem is that it is not built into the UI. We hope that Apple will make the process of copying the necessary information to and from the buffer in iOS 14 even easier.
Block spam calls
It would be nice to see improvements in iOS 14 regarding blocking unnecessary calls. For example, such a blocker already exists in Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, and given the number of advertising calls, this becomes relevant for any smartphone and all platforms. Yes, last year the iOS update added this feature, but it was not free. I would like to get access to such options in full and not for a fee.
